Eva Maria asked me to write this. She is busy leatherworking.
We arrived Waalwijk, Netherlands, Friday (April 16th 2000) at 1 p.m. The workshops started at 2 p.m. and Eva joined the class of Robb Barr. The subject was "Detailing of eyes". "He teaches and explains very well during classes, and has many tips and hints for leatherworkers", says Eva Maria.
In the afternoon we went to the "Leather and Shoe Museum" in Waalwijk to have a look at the regular exhibition. The goldleather [Gilded leather] section was the most interesting place for us. We were surprised when we found goldleather from 1700 with almost identical pattern as Eva Maria's work for this exhibition. Mr. Blok, the manager of the museum, told us that 90 % of their goldleather collection was sent away for restoration. These items will be possible to see next year. Afterwards we went outside to take a brief look at the items made by the exhibitants of the Leather 2000 Exhibition.
An-Kuo Dwan from Taiwan had made some impressive leather sculptures that really caught our attention. (See attachment). Amazing work. (Images 047.jpg - 051.jpg below. Here are detail shots of two sculptures #052 and #048)
Maria Bogdan had made a lovely cover for a sketchbook (027.jpg), and Peter Main had made a beautiful head of a horse seen through a window (018.jpg). Their work are very detailed. The shoes of Garry Greenwood (057.jpg), and the leathermasks of Michael Taylor was breathtaking(016.jpg).
The official opening by the mayor was 10 p.m. Saturday. A lot of people were present. After the opening we all could view the items. There were masks, pictures of animals, belts, vests, lamps, landscape, motorcycle items, bags and a lot more.
The festive dinner took place Saturday evening. About 80 guests enjoyed a wonderful meal and many different subjects were discussed. These subjects was continued in the bar after this lovely dinner.
We had to leave Waalwijk by 1 p.m. on Sunday to catch our plane so we missed the IILG-lunch at 1 p.m.
